How Far Is NSA Crane From Bloomington and Bedford? A Commute Guide
From Bloomington, NSA Crane is about a 44-minute drive, roughly 37 miles by I-69. From Bedford, it's about 39 minutes and 29 miles by State Road 58. Those are Google Maps times to Crane's main address on Highway 361, checked on a weekday afternoon, so your door-to-gate time will depend on your street, your gate and the time of day.
Crane is a big base, covering more than 98 square miles in Martin County, so where you work inside it matters as much as where you live. Here is how the drive looks from the towns I work in most.
How long is the drive to Crane from each town?
Weekday-afternoon Google Maps times to NSWC Crane, 300 Highway 361, Crane, checked October 7, 2026:
Bloomfield: about 14 minutes, 11 miles, by US 231
Bedford: about 39 minutes, 29 miles, by State Road 58
Ellettsville: about 43 minutes, 41 miles, by I-69
Bloomington: about 44 minutes, 37 miles, by I-69
Mitchell: about 50 minutes, 40 miles, by State Road 37 and State Road 58
These are starting points, not promises. Morning shift change, weather and which gate you badge in at can all add time.
Which route do people use?
From Bloomington and Ellettsville, most of the drive is I-69, which runs southwest toward the base. From Bedford, State Road 58 heads west toward Crane. Bloomfield sits just north of the base on US 231, which is why it's the shortest drive on the list.
If you'll be commuting every day, drive the route at the hour you'll actually travel before you make an offer. A route that's easy at 1 p.m. can feel different at 6 a.m. in January.
What changes the commute the most?
Three things, in my experience:
Your gate. Crane has more than one entrance. Ask your supervisor or sponsor which one you'll use, then measure the drive to that gate.
Your exact address. A home on the south side of Bloomington can be several minutes closer than one on the north side. The same goes for homes east of Bedford versus west of it.
The season. Rural two-lane stretches are slower in snow and fog. If you're coming from out of state, plan on a little extra in winter.
What should you check before you buy?
Beyond the drive, the questions I'd look at are the ones that change daily life: internet service at the address, how the road is maintained in winter, the distance to groceries and a hospital, and what the property costs to own, including taxes and utilities. Bedford and Bloomington feel very different, and the commute is only one part of that choice.
If you're weighing the two, my post What I Tell Buyers Who Are Curious About Bedford, Indiana covers what Bedford is like day to day.
