Fall Weekend in Lawrence County: Spring Mill, Bluespring Caverns and Mitchell
A fall day in Lawrence County can cover a working 1817 gristmill, a boat ride on an underground river, and a hometown stop for one of America's first astronauts, all within a short drive of Bedford. Spring Mill State Park's Pioneer Village is open daily through the last full weekend of October, and Bluespring Caverns runs boat tours every day through October 31.
I'm in this part of Indiana every week, and this is the outing I suggest when someone asks what to do with a free fall Saturday near Bedford. Hours change by season, so I checked them against the official sites for this post.
What's open at Spring Mill State Park in October?
Spring Mill State Park sits just outside Mitchell. According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources:
Pioneer Village and gristmill: open daily through the last full weekend of October. The mill is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The centerpiece is a three-story limestone gristmill built in 1817 that still grinds cornmeal.
Grissom Memorial: open year-round, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, closed major holidays. It honors Virgil "Gus" Grissom, one of the seven Mercury astronauts and the second American in space.
Twin Caves boat tours: these run in summer, from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, so they're closed this time of year.
There's a per-vehicle entrance fee at Indiana state parks. Check the DNR site for the current amount.
What is Bluespring Caverns like?
Bluespring Caverns, near Bedford, takes visitors by electric-powered boat along an underground river. The tour lasts about an hour and covers about a mile and a quarter by boat plus a short walking section, according to the caverns. It's open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 31. Admission is $26 for adults and $14 for children 15 and under, and the caverns say tours aren't recommended for children under 4. Heavy rain can pause tours, so call (812) 279-9471 if the weather looks iffy.
Why stop in Mitchell?
Mitchell is the small town next to Spring Mill, and it's Gus Grissom's hometown. It's an easy place to stop for lunch between the park and the caverns. If you liked the Persimmon Festival in September, my post Mitchell, Indiana's Persimmon Festival: What to Know Before You Go has more on the town.
How would you plan the day?
Here's an easy order:
Morning: start at Spring Mill's Pioneer Village while the mill is running.
Midday: lunch in Mitchell, then the Grissom Memorial.
Afternoon: finish at Bluespring Caverns, which is open until 5 p.m.
If you enjoy evening programs at the park, my post on Spring Mill State Park's Full Sturgeon Moon Hike shows what the naturalists put on during the year.
